I recently came across an article about George RR Martin’s hatred of fan fiction. To be fair I think/hope he was referring to paid fan fiction since a quote was –
“I’ve always admired Tolkien and his immense influence on fantasy; although I’ve never met the man, I admire Christopher Tolkien, his son, who has been the guardian of Tolkien’s estate who has never allowed that. I’m sure there are publishers waiting in the wings with giant bags of money just waiting for someone to say “Yes, go ahead, let’s write Sauron Strikes Back.”
I hope that is the only stick up his ass- “I don’t want anyone messing with my story- for profit.”
otherwise please read the following-
Sam’s heart was breaking, but he knew he had to be strong, “Elena, three years ago your father was diagnosed with extremely aggressive intestinal cancer. When you and your mother found him unconscious, he had suffered a stroke. Sam sat down, covering his face. It seemed like only yesterday he and Ryan were Elena’s age.
Elena crawled into her father’s bed. Her daddy was burning with fever. “No, this can’t be happening. I want to cook for you! I want you to be there when I open my restaurant! I want you at my wedding!” Elena tears fell in on her daddy’s chest. “Dad, you’re my best friend, I wanted to take care of you.” She touched Ryan’s stomach.
Ryan held her hand. “Remember what I said about scars?”
“We wear them with pride.”
“To show the world how hard we can fight. You have to believe me, Elena, I fought as hard as I could.”
Megan held his hand. “You don’t have to fight anymore.”
Now read it again knowing this is a passage from my latest fanfic-

Soma’s heart was breaking, but he knew he had to be strong, “Elena, three years ago your father was diagnosed with extremely aggressive intestinal cancer. When you and your mother found him unconscious, he had suffered a stroke. Soma sat down, covering his face. It seemed like only yesterday he and Ryo were Elena’s age.
Elena crawled into her father’s bed. Her daddy was burning with fever. “No, this can’t be happening. I want to cook for you! I want you to be there when I open my restaurant! I want you at my wedding!” Elena tears fell in on her daddy’s chest. “Dad, you’re my best friend, I wanted to take care of you.” She touched Ryo’s stomach.
Ryo held her hand. “Remember what I said about scars?”
“We wear them with pride.”
“To show the world how hard we can fight. You have to believe me, Elena, I fought as hard as I could.”
Megumi held his hand. “You don’t have to fight anymore.”
Have I lost your respect?

“Fanfic is lazy, he said at a recent convention, and I agree. Take inspiration from what he’s writing and create something of your own. Don’t just take what he’s done and rearrange it like furniture in your fantasies.”
“rearrange it like furniture in your fantasies…”
So what if someone does do that!
Is it so offensive that I want to imagine a world where all of the teen characters are grown up with their own children, dealing with emotional issues?
That Soma would become the mature leader.
That Ryo, the rock star wild card would be dying of terminal illness, after fathering a little girl who saw him as her hero.
Fan fiction runs a gamut. In fact, I was inspired to make this post because my latest story got 2 reviews from the same person.
The review on Ch 1 was “these are not the traditionally accepted pairings. ”
Then the review on Ch 5 was “this story is great you should continue it.”
Why? Because in Ch1 I introduced the families:
The Ryo, the rock star chef ended up marrying the Alice, the emotionally abusive girl. Soma, the leader married Megumi the meek girl, Erina the queen bee married Akira the homeless kid who had been raised by school faculty.
Then I went into WHY. In my world, Ryo stayed with Alice to be a father, to protect his daughter from Alice’s physical and emotional abuse.
Soma married Megumi because she was the kind underdog who stole his heart.
Leaving Erina alone. But Akira stayed at the school to help his mother’s research. When he wanted to apprentice towards becoming a teacher Erina was assigned by her grandfather, the principal, to become his mentor. (This pairing is so out of character I couldn’t even find a single image of them together.)
I want to end this post with some poems as inspired by –

As you can probably tell although Ryo is my hero (I’m making plans to get a Ryo tattoo), I am developing a wee little crush on Akria.
So yeah- long live fan fiction. Fuck George RR Martin, but more so fuck Devin Faraci who wrote-
“I think it’s disingenuous to compare Alan Moore using culturally significant stories in ways that comment on the stories and their cultural significance with people who write about Harry Potter putting his wand in Draco Malfoy’s butthole. ”
That’s actually kind of hot…
